BMW R80RT - 1985 (3500 miles)

This is my first bike. It is a 1985 BMW r80rt. I bought it in 2011 from a guy in Pennsylvania. At the time I did not have my license nor have I ever ridden a motorcycle in my life. The guy I bought the bike from, dropped the bike off with his truck to my house in College Park, 100 miles drive, and roll it into the house for me. The seller couldn’t have been nicer.

I could not stand how big the RT fairing was, so I removed it within the first week before I even rode the bike. Beyond that I did not do anything, I was worry that the cables would be too long after rerouting, but that was a newbie fear. Interesting how much unrealistic fear and apprehension is develop from lack of understanding.

I started learning to ride with this bike in the parking lot under the tutelage of Yermo Lamers. I remember how hot it was wearing all the gears practicing in the summer time in the parking lot going at most 5 miles an hour. Needless to day, we brought a lot of water. On one of my very first ride, I did not understand how the petcock works and had it on reserve the whole time. I ran out of fuel on a hill, luckily I was with Yermo and Duncan who was able to get fuel for me. After getting into riding, the quirky cold start issues in the morning and the seemingly heaviness of the bike with so little power bother me more than it should. I sold it at the end of the season that same year, not a day goes by, do I not regret selling her.
